Children at the Center of Addiction, A Voice for the Voiceless

Judge Robert Rancourt, Appointed as a Minnesota District Court Judge and assigned to serve statewide as Senior Judge; served on the Advisory Council for the National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institutes of Health.  Judge Rancourt will provide perspective and experience with individuals and families facing life changing decisions. Judge Rancourt will address specific aspects of the court system: the mission, challenges, and success of drug courts; wellbeing of children living with parents who have substance use disorders either diagnosed or undiagnosed; and the legal and social issues surrounding grandparents raising their grandchildren,– especially during COVID-19.

Dr. Gaya Dowling, Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) sponsored Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, will brief our audience on this long-term study of brain development and child health in the United States. The ABCD Study has enrolled nearly 12,000 diverse children from across the U.S. at ages 9-10 and is following them through their teens and into early adulthood to explore how diverse experiences during adolescence shape brain, cognitive, social, emotional, and academic development. By studying participants throughout adolescence, scientists can learn more about what enhances or disrupts a young person’s life trajectory, with the ultimate goal of providing actionable information to help educators, health professionals and policymakers improve the lives of all children, today and for generations to come.

Jerry Moe, Jerry Moe, MA, is National Director of Children’s Programs at the Betty Ford Center, a part of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. An Advisory Board Member of the National Association for Children of Addiction (NACoA), he is an author, lecturer, and trainer on issues for children and families hurt by addiction. He has served as a key advisor and consultant to Sesame Street on its Parental Addiction Initiative. His latest book is Through a Child’s Eyes: Understanding Addiction and Recovery. He was featured in the Emmy award winning Nick News special “Under the Influence: Children of Addiction”.
